Future Mega-City NEOM in Saudi Arabia Receives First High-Profile Holiday Visitor: King Salman

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman arrived yesterday for a holiday in NEOM, the $500 billion future city in the remote northwest corner of the Kingdom near Egypt.

It is not known where or for how long the King will stay in NEOM, but according to Reuters, the first contracts awarded for the new city were for 5 new palaces for senior Saudi royals in February.

Satellite images taken on July 30th, available at zoom.earth, of the NEOM area show construction beginning on a collection of large residences about 5 miles from the coastline, but the buildings appear to be in the early stage of development. A small landing strip and a highway lead up to the residences outside of the future city.

Earlier this month, Saudi Arabia replaced the first CEO of NEOM, Klaus Kleinfeld, with Nadhmi al-Nasr, a member of NEOM’s founding board and a veteran of state oil giant Saudi Aramco.

NEOM is being billed as a planned regional silicon valley.
