The United States on Monday confirmed a “brief separate meeting” between American and Chinese representatives at the international talks hosted at the weekend by Saudi Arabia on ending the war in Ukraine, saying it was “productive” that Beijing took part. But we thought it was … productive that they came”.

  • Ukraine, Allies to Woo the Global South at Saudi Arabia Meeting

Ukraine and its allies are making their case for Kyiv’s peace plan this weekend to more than 40 countries as the war with Russia intensifies with attacks on key shipping routes in the Black Sea. • Opinion: Saudi’s MBS wants more than peace at his Ukraine summit

Ukrainian officials say the venue is a boon for them “that completely destroys the narrative of Russia” that Ukraine is only supported by “countries of the collective West.” They expect as many as 40 nations to be represented, including the US and India. In the days ahead of the summit, the Ukrainians set out their intent. “Our goal in Saudi Arabia is to develop a unified vision of the formula and to work out the possibilities of holding the future Global Peace Summit,” they said, referring to Ukraine’s peace plan. That Moscow will only “monitor” and not attend risks the summit becoming a desert snowflake, momentarily awesome and inspiring, but blink and it’s gone.

Ukrainian and Western diplomats hope the meeting in Jeddah of national security advisers and other senior officials from some 40 countries will agree on key principles for a future peace settlement to end Russia's war in Ukraine. Moscow is not attending. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Wednesday he hoped the initiative will lead to a "peace summit" of leaders from around the world this autumn to endorse the principles, based on his own 10-point formula for a peace settlement.

  • Saudi Arabia and Turkey: The new peace brokers of Russia-Ukraine war?

Nearly 300 prisoners of war – both Ukrainian and Russian – faced death or indefinite detention in late September of 2022. It was a fate that looked all the more real as Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the mobilization of some 300,000 Russian conscripts to fight on the Ukrainian front. But on that very same day, the warring countries made the shock announcement that they had come to an agreement on a prisoner swap, which would release the detained fighters and political prisoners from their respective captors.

  • Saudi Arabia Hosts Ukraine Talks in Outreach to Global South

The biggest developing economies have so far remained mostly neutral in the face of Russia’s invasion of its neighbor and the US and the EU have been trying to persuade those countries not to offer President Vladimir Putin help in sustaining his war machine. The meeting, which follows a similar gathering in Copenhagen in June, is expected to discuss Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s peace formula and the Ukrainian president’s effort to hold a global summit on the proposals later this year. China was invited to the meeting in Denmark but didn’t attend.
