    UAE to Oman train travel is a step closer after rail operators and Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala today penned a deal to help develop the $3bn transport network. Oman and Etihad Rail Company, the developer and operator of the UAE-Oman Rail Network, signed an agreement with Mubadala Investment Company to support the development of the 303km railway network, which connects Oman and the UAE.

  • Sanction-hit Russia Displays Combat-tested Arms at UAE Fair

    Russia showed up in force Monday at an arms fair in the United Arab Emirates, displaying combat-tested weapons up for export, including rifles and air defense systems. At an isolated pavilion at the International Defense Exhibition (IDEX) in Abu Dhabi, Moscow's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport said it had more than 200 full-scale models of armament, ammunition and military gear. Russian armored vehicles, attack helicopters and anti-aircraft missile systems were also on display at IDEX, which opened Monday, as crippling Western sanctions push President Vladimir Putin to seek new markets for arms exports.

    The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has informed the United Nations Security Council of its decision to no longer call for a vote today on a draft resolution against Israel's expansion of illegal settlements, agreeing with the Palestinian Authority (PA) to drop the opposition following intervention by the United States.

  • UAE signs $1.2bn of military deals on opening day of IDEX 2023

    The UAE signed military deals worth more than $1.2bn (AED4.5bn) on day one of the International Defence Exhibition (IDEX) and the Naval Defence Exhibition (NAVDEX) 2023. The UAE’s Tawazun Council, the independent government entity that works closely with the Ministry of Defence and security agencies to maximise value through acquisition systems, announced it has signed 11 deals with local and international companies at the military trade shows.

    On Tuesday UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (MBZ) announced $100 million in aid to Turkey and Syria, setting the bar for international assistance.   • New alcohol rules introduced for all hotel events in UAE

    From February 15, any corporate or private events will require a mandatory CID alcohol permit, according to Arabian Business. The CID permit will be applied for by the hotel on behalf of the event organiser. The AED1,250 fee (per day) should then be passed on to the client. Organisers must apply for the CID permit at least 14 days in advance, says the circular.

  • UAE healthcare giant Burjeel Holdings announces new Saudi venture

    UAE healthcare operator Burjeel Holdings has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to create a joint venture with Saudi Arabia’s Leejam Sports Company. The new venture between the two companies will see a joint establishment which operates a network of over 60 physiotherapy, rehabilitation and wellness centers in Leejam clubs across the kingdom. This will also include rehabilitation and sports medicine facilities in Saudi Arabia’s main centers.
