  • Saudi Industrial Production Index down 11.2% in September

    Saudi Arabia’s Industrial Production Index (IPI) fell by 11.2% year-on-year (YoY) in September 2023, extending its downtrend to the fifth successive month.   Data issued by the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) showed that Saudi IPI fell to 122.99 points in September, according to the base year 2010, compared to 138.5 points in the year-ago period.   Despite the continued increase in the manufacturing activity, and the electricity and gas supply activity, September’s decline in the mining and quarrying activity directly impacted the general index due to its heavy weight in the index.

    Saudi Arabia is set to sign SR2 billion ($533 million) worth of agreements with African countries, the Kingdom’s finance minister has announced. Speaking during the Saudi-Arab-African Economic Conference in Riyadh, Mohammed Al-Jadaan said the deals would be reached through the Kingdom’s Fund for Development. The minister said the agreements would be struck with a “multitude” of countries and entities on the continent.

    Saudi Arabia has outperformed its target for attracting regional headquarters, with over 180 companies now established in the Kingdom.     The Riyadh Region Municipality has announced the completion of the first phase of inventorying and documenting buildings of the second half of the 20th century (1950-2000) in the Saudi capital.

    The project aims to monitor and document the stages of the architectural and urban development in Riyadh, as well as to highlight the distinct development renaissance that Riyadh witnessed in that era. The municipality stated that it has completed about 50% from the project's stages that shed light on the impact role of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosque King Salman during his tenure as the Emir of the Riyadh region. It has also inventoried the most important urban landmark historical value, and the cultural and social dimensions, leading to finding a mechanism to preserve and invest in these landmarks, in line with the objectives of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 to preserve the heritage of the Kingdom.

    A consortium of Masdar, EDF Renewables and Nesma Holding has won a bid for the construction of a 1.1GW solar plant in Saudi Arabia.

    It placed the lowest bid of $16.84 per megawatt-hour to secure the Al Henakiyah solar project from the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC). The consortium of Abu Dhabi-based Masdar, France’s EDF Renewables and Saudi conglomerate Nesma has entered a power purchase agreement with SPPC for a period of 25 years.

    BNP Paribas SA has hired Jalal Al Marhoon as a managing director in Saudi Arabia, the latest sign that foreign investment banks continue to expand in one of the world’s most active markets for deals. The French banking giant’s Saudi entity recently appointed Al Marhoon as managing director and put him in charge of a portfolio of local clients, according to a spokeswoman for BNP. He’ll report to Ammar Pharaon, who heads BNP’s investment banking operations in the kingdom.

    Saudi Arabia's energy minister said on Thursday that climate change solutions should not come at the expense of "less empowered people". "Climate change is crucial, important, but it should not be attended to by crushing the bones and the future of the less empowered people," Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said at the Saudi-Arab-African Economic Conference in Riyadh.
