  • Edelman Hires Ex-Ogilvy Leader As Saudi Arabia General Manager

    Edelman has appointed former Ogilvy leader Elie Azzi as the new general manager of its business in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Azzi (pictured, left) will join Edelman in January, replacing Kenana Dahlan, who has left the firm to become a government advisor in Saudi Arabia. In his time at Ogilvy, Azzi led the agency’s transformation of the communications and PR function in the kingdom, and has also held senior positions at Havas and Porter Novelli in the region. At the same time, Edelman KSA has appointed Sarah Alarrak (pictured, right) in the newly-created role of strategic communications advisor, with a remit that includes growing the agency’s client base in Saudi Arabia.

    Saudi Arabia announced a 30-year tax exemption package for foreign companies establishing their regional headquarters in the kingdom, the latest move in its aggressive campaign to attract international investment and headcount. “The Ministry of Investment of Saudi Arabia, in coordination with the Ministry of Finance and the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority today announced 30-year tax incentive package for The Regional Headquarters (RHQ) Program, to further streamline the process for multinational companies (MNCs) to establish their RHQ in Saudi Arabia,” the Saudi state press agency wrote in a statement Tuesday.

    Israeli forces stormed southern Gaza's main city on Tuesday in what they called the most intense day of combat in five weeks of ground operations against Hamas militants, and hospitals struggled to cope with scores of Palestinian dead and wounded. In what appeared to be the biggest ground assault in Gaza since a truce with Hamas unravelled last week, Israel said its forces - which were backed by warplanes - had reached the heart of Khan Younis.

    Israel has assembled a system of large pumps it could use to flood Hamas’s vast network of tunnels under the Gaza Strip with seawater, a tactic that could destroy the tunnels and drive the fighters from their underground refuge but also threaten Gaza’s water supply, U.S. officials said. The Israel Defense Forces finished assembling large seawater pumps roughly one mile north of the Al-Shati refugee camp around the middle of last month. Each of at least five pumps can draw water from the Mediterranean Sea and move thousands of cubic meters of water per hour into the tunnels, flooding them within weeks.

  • US aid chief arrives in Egypt with aid for Gaza, announces more aid for Palestinians

    U.S. aid chief Samantha Power arrived in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on Tuesday, where she announced more than $21 million in additional assistance for the Palestinian people affected by the conflict between Israel and Islamist group Hamas. The USAID administrator arrived in Al Arish with a delivery of 36,000 pounds of food assistance and medical supplies airlifted by the Department of Defense from Jordan and intended for Gaza, according to a statement.

    Libya's National Oil Corporation (NOC) expects to achieve close to zero gas flaring by 2030, Chairman Farhat Bengdara said in a press conference at the COP28 summit on Tuesday. Bengdara added that NOC is aiming for an 83% reduction in gas flaring by 2030.

    Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al-Khateeb said that the designs for the Expo 2030 site in Riyadh have been completed under the full supervision of Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman. Addressing a session titled “Investing in Sustainable Tourism” at the Saudi Green Forum 2023 in Dubai, he said that the Kingdom is fully confident that these designs will meet environmental standards and preserve heritage and history. Regarding the tourism sector, Al-Khateeb confirmed that the Kingdom has begun the process of preparing all tourism-related facilities, whether by increasing hotels or aircraft seat capacity, in addition to establishing a new airport in Riyadh that can accommodate 20 million passengers.
