Though the latent intention to develop domestic military manufacturing arguably exists in all six GCC countries, as of 2023, only two member states – Saudi Arabia and the UAE – have made any substantive progress in this regard. For the most part, Saudi Arabia’s military manufacturing occurs under the umbrella of the state-owned Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI), while the UAE’s military manufacturing is performed by the EDGE Group. In a major move to boost Saudi Arabia’s defense sector, the Kingdom’s General Authority for Military Industries has unveiled a series of investment opportunities in the military industries sector. GAMI’s strategic expansion includes an initial offering of 10 investment prospects with applications in both military and civilian domains. The announcement was jointly made by GAMI and the Invest in Saudi Arabia initiative, in collaboration with the Kingdom’s Ministry of Investment, as reported by the Saudi Press Agency.

Israel calls for civilians to leave Gaza City as military amasses tanks
Israel's military on Friday called for all civilians of Gaza City, more than 1 million people, to relocate south within 24 hours, as it amassed tanks for an expected ground invasion in response to a devastating attack by the militant group Hamas. The United Nations said evacuating everyone was impossible with power supplies cut and food and water in the Palestinian enclave running short after a week of retaliatory air strikes and a full Israeli blockade.

The United States will send multiple military ships and aircraft closer to Israel as a show of support, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said, with Washington believing Hamas' deadly attacks may have been motivated to disrupt a potential normalizing of Israel-Saudi Arabia ties. Hamas fighters rampaged through Israeli towns as the country suffered its bloodiest day in decades on Saturday. Israel battered Palestinians with air strikes in Gaza on Sunday, with hundreds reportedly killed on both sides. The spiraling violence threatens to start a major new war in the Middle East.

US Military Presence Deters Iranian Attacks On Middle East Shipping
On Wednesday, the commander of US Air Forces Central Command revealed that the decision made in July to deploy fighter jets to the Persian Gulf, alongside a naval destroyer and an amphibious assault group comprising 2,500 US Marines, appears to have made an impact on Iranian officials. Lieutenant General Alexus Grynkewich, speaking to members of the Defense Writers Group in Washington, stated, "The increased presence of surface vessels that went in ... combined with our airpower has deterred Iran from taking any actions against maritime shipping." He added, "It has had good effects."

US approves $500 million sale of spare parts to Saudi military
The Biden administration on Thursday approved a major $500 million sale to fund spare and repair parts for Saudi Arabia’s military. The proposed sale, which the State Department notified to Congress on Thursday, would fund components for Saudi Arabia’s existing Abrams and M-60 tanks, Bradley fighting vehicles, light armored vehicles and Humvees. The proposal would also fund spare and repair parts for rifles and pistols as well as crew-served weapons systems, such as the kingdom’s TOW anti-tank missile launchers, radar sets, recoilless rifles as well as computer units, radar sets and night vision devices, among other equipment.
