     The leader of Hamas made his first visit to Egypt for more than a month on Wednesday, a rare personal intervention in diplomacy amid what a source described as intensive talks on a new ceasefire to let aid reach Gaza and get hostages freed.

    Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, who normally resides in Qatar, typically intervenes in diplomacy publicly only when progress seems likely. He last travelled to Egypt in early November before the announcement of the only agreement on a ceasefire in the war so far, a week-long pause during which more than 100 hostages were released.

    Fighting between Israel and Hamas intensified across Gaza on Monday, fuelling fears flagged by the United Nations at the weekend of a breakdown in public order and a mass exodus of Palestinians into Egypt.

    The narrow coastal strip has been under a full Israeli blockade since the start of the conflict more than two months ago and the border with Egypt is the only other way out.

    Most of Gaza's 2.3 million people have been driven from their homes and residents say it is impossible to find refuge in the densely populated enclave, with around 18,000 people already killed and conflict intensifying.

    A cargo ship broke down in Egypt's Suez Canal on Wednesday and crashed into a bridge over the crucial waterway, authorities said, adding that the incident did not disrupt traffic through the canal. Adm. Ossama Rabei, head of the Suez Canal Authority, said the Singapore-flagged One Orpheus went off course after its rudder broke down before ploughing into the Mansi Bridge, near the port city of Ismailia. The extent of the damage to both the ship and the bridge is unclear.

    U.S. aid chief Samantha Power arrived in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on Tuesday, where she announced more than $21 million in additional assistance for the Palestinian people affected by the conflict between Israel and Islamist group Hamas. The USAID administrator arrived in Al Arish with a delivery of 36,000 pounds of food assistance and medical supplies airlifted by the Department of Defense from Jordan and intended for Gaza, according to a statement.

    The 20th Saudi relief plane dedicated to the Palestinian people in Gaza arrived in Egypt on Sunday, carrying 39 tons of aid, including food and shelter materials. The assistance aligns with Saudi Arabia's historic role in supporting the Palestinian people in times of crisis. Since the start of conflict in Gaza on October 7, Saudi Arabia has exerted all efforts to support Palestinians.

    On November 2, the Saudi leadership issued directives to launch a fundraising campaign on the Sahem Platform, which is affiliated with the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief), to aid the residents of Gaza. The campaign has so far collected SAR5535,222,380.

    Saudi Ambassador in Cairo Osama Naqli described the recent meetings between Saudi Minister of Commerce Majid bin Abdullah Al-Qasabi and senior Egyptian officials as fruitful and part of joint efforts to boost bilateral cooperation. During his meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli, Qasabi, who led a delegation of 90 top Saudi investors yesterday, discussed ways to the economic and business partnership between the sisterly Arab countries, Naqli said in a statement posted to his X account on Monday.
