But after various agencies spent $7.6 billion over more than a decade on counternarcotics efforts, opium poppy cultivation levels in Afghanistan hit an all-time high in 2013, according to a report released Tuesday by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction.

Will Afghanistan Become the ‘Forgotten War’ Again?

And after nearly $800 billion, and more than 2,300 American lives, the war in Afghanistan will officially come to an end this year. But the mission is far from over. Whatever military ambitions that defined the war’s original name, “Operation Enduring Freedom,” have now been reduced to a far less ambitious—and more lasting—approach with the mission’s new name: “Operation Resolute Support.”

The Only Choice Left for Afghanistan

In effect, the U.S. administration has indicated that unless Afghan presidential candidates Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani adhere to the national unity framework they agreed to in July, the sine qua non U.S. financial assistance to Afghanistan will come to an abrupt halt. But Obama's litmus test for support is leaving them with little choice but to accept this accommodation. As such, it appears as if the only choice left is for the candidates to agree to a power-sharing interim government that adheres to Obama's doctrine.

    Afghanistan: The Long Withdrawal

Five years ago, the war in Afghanistan began to escalate drastically. Troop surges soon pushed the number of NATO troops up to more than 140,000, and the levels of violence grew to match the surge. At the time, I felt the conflict was being under-reported relative to other international stories, especially considering the level of commitment involved, so I began a monthly series dedicated to covering the ongoing war in Afghanistan. Now, more than 60 monthly photo essays later, I'm ending the series as a regular feature. I will continue to post photos from Afghanistan through the withdrawal, as well as after the handover—but as an occasional entry, not monthly.
