  • UFC Return to Saudi Arabia Officially Announced for Feb. 1, 2025

    Riyadh Season is back, and the UFC is likewise set to return to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on February 1, 2025. Promotion officials announced next year’s UFC Saudi Arabia card via social media on Saturday. The show will mark the second event from the UFC in the Middle Eastern nation, following UFC on ABC 6 this past June. That card was headlined by Robert Whittaker and Ikram Aliskerov, with the latter filling in for Khamzat Chimaev, who was forced out of the event. February’s return date does not have any fights officially announced for it, though several bouts have been rumored and/or reported, including unconfirmed reports of Shara Bullet facing Michael “Venom” Page.

  • Saudi Arabia Seeks to Balance Relations with Iran and Israel

    The first signs of a thaw came in March 2023, when Iran and Saudi Arabia restored diplomatic relations after more than seven years following a surprise Chinese-brokered agreement. But it was Israel's invasion of Gaza in October 2023 -- soon after the U.S.- and EU-designated Palestinian terrorist group Hamas carried out an unprecedented attack on Israel -- that gave real impetus to Iran-Saudi rapprochement efforts. Since the war erupted, Iran and Israel have traded direct aerial attacks for the first time. The tit-for-tat assaults have brought the region to the brink of a full-blown conflict. Saudi Arabia is "concerned that these escalating tensions between Israel and Iran could spiral out of control and lead to a broader regional conflict that may impact their interests," said Hamidreza Azizi, fellow at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs.

    Iran and Saudi Arabia are stepping up their pace of engagement. Over the past week, the Kingdom has sent a high-ranking military delegation to Tehran for talks on potential collaboration.   • Céline Dion performs two of her classic hits at Elie Saab fashion show in Saudi Arabia

    On Nov. 13, she performed in Saudi Arabia at 1001 Seasons of Elie Saab, a fashion show celebrating the Lebanese designer’s 45-year career. Céline sang her 1993 classic “The Power of Love,” as well as her 2002 song “I’m Alive.” The show was livestreamed and archived on YouTube. According to the U.K. paper The Standard, the appearance marked Céline’s first-ever performance in Saudi Arabia. According to the paper, Céline said on the red carpet ahead of the show, “Being here for the first time is kind of a dream come true, and Monsieur Elie Saab and his entourage and his beautiful family has welcomed us here. … I’ve been wearing his dresses, his talent for many, many years.”

  • Investcorp names Mashaal AlJomaih as CEO for Saudi Arabia unit

    Investcorp, the Bahrain-based alternative asset manager backed by Abu Dhabi's Mubadala Investment Company, has appointed financial industry veteran Mashaal AlJomaih as chief executive for its Saudi Arabia unit, as it seeks to boost its ties with investors in the Arab world's biggest economy. Mr AlJomaih, who has more than 20 years of experience in investment and advisory roles, will replace the retiring Yasser Bajsair, Investcorp said in a statement on Sunday. Before joining Investcorp in 2022, Mr AlJomaih held a number of senior positions at BNP Paribas Investment Company and JPMorgan Chase Bank, and co-founded of Darin Partners, a UK-based commercial real estate investment and consultancy.

    According to AFP, foreigners executed this year included 21 from Pakistan, 20 from Yemen, 14 from Syria, 10 from Nigeria, nine from Egypt, eight from Jordan and seven from Ethiopia. There were also three each from Sudan, India and Afghanistan, and one each from Sri Lanka, Eritrea and the Philippines.

    Saudi Arabia has secured the hosting rights for the 6th UN World Data Forum, to be held in Riyadh in 2026. The announcement was made at the conclusion of the 5th UN World Data Forum, which took place in Medellín, Colombia, from November 12 to 15, 2024. The forum gathered representatives from 193 UN member states. Saudi Arabia’s selection was endorsed by the High-Level Group for Partnership, Coordination, and Capacity-Building in Statistics (HLG-PCCB), in recognition of the Kingdom’s robust statistical capabilities and commitment to data-driven development.
