In U.S. shale bust, frack-sand miners are the new coal companies
The shale bust in early March has turned the frack sand mining business into the new coal. As U.S. oil prices plunged, sand suppliers have shut mines, dismissed workers and slashed operations as customers stop drilling and fracking new shale oil wells. “You can drive by plants and see which ones have already been walked away from,” said Peter Allen, a director at closely held Black Mountain Sand, which operates mines in Texas and Oklahoma.

Why Import Oil? Saudi Cargoes Help U.S. Refiners
It’s very different from U.S. West Texas Intermediate, which is light and “sweet.” The two crudes aren’t interchangeable in refiners’ systems. In addition, Saudi crude often is considered a “base load,” typically doesn’t spend time in storage and won’t take up U.S. storage space. Again, Saudi crude is needed by some U.S. refiners to optimize manufacturing of certain products.

The U.S. Departments of State and Energy should commit to regular briefings to relevant committees in Congress on talks about nuclear power cooperation with Saudi Arabia, a congressional watchdog said in a report on Monday. The Government Accountability Office, or GAO, report said Congress should consider amending the 1954 Atomic Energy Act, or AEA, to require the briefings for the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations about negotiations on nuclear power sharing.
