  • World’s largest solar microgrid rises along Saudi’s Red Sea

    Featuring a 400MW solar PV system coupled with a 1.3GWh energy storage system, the world’s largest photovoltaic-energy storage microgrid is currently being built in Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Project. Built on the coast of southwestern Tabuk Province, west of the Red Sea, the project covers a planned area of 28,000 square kilometers. Upon completion in 2030, the Red Sea City is expected to have 50 hotels with 8,000 rooms, and more than 1,000 residential properties across 22 islands and six inland sites. It will also cater to up to one million visitors per year, and all of these visitors are set to benefit from off-grid, clean energy.

    Saudi energy giant ACWA Power has commissioned the 700-megawatt AlRass1 Solar Photovoltaic Project, furthering the Kingdom’s renewable energy goals. The plant has begun power generation after receiving a commercial operations certificate from its off-taker, the company stated on Tadawul.

    Saudi Arabia’s General Directorate of Civil Defense issued on Sunday a warning about heavy rainfall across parts of the Kingdom, starting Sunday and continuing until Thursday. Residents are urged to avoid valleys and seasonal lakes. The Makkah Region is expected to be hit the hardest, with heavy to moderate rainfall, flash floods, hailstorms, and strong winds that may cause sandstorms in Makkah City and Taif. Neighboring governorates, including Jeddah and Al-Lith, will experience lighter rainfall.

  • Tourist spending in Saudi Arabia hit new high in 2023

    Around 27 million international tourists spent SAR141 billion riyals ($37.6 billion) in Saudi Arabia in 2023, the highest figure yet. The international spending, published on X by the ministry of tourism, was a 44 percent rise on 2022 and compares to the previous high of SAR103.4 billion spent by 17.5 million inbound tourists in 2019, according to government figures.

    Global architecture studio Populous has unveiled its plans for Aramco Stadium, a 47,000-seat sports venue in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia, designed to be "iconic in the football world". Set to host the upcoming 2027 AFC Asian Cup, the building will be defined by a spiralling form intended to evoke waves, in a nod to its position on the coast of the Arabian Gulf. Populous is also developing it to meet the requirements to be a 2034 FIFA World Cup venue.
