Iran and Saudi Arabia Only Days Away from Re-Opening Embassies – Report

Saudi Arabia and Iran will reopen embassies in each other’s capitals “within days,” Reuters reports, citing Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, though he did not give specific dates for each to re-open.

“During the last phone call between the foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia on Eid al-Fitr, we agreed to work in the next coming days on the reopening of the Iranian and Saudi embassies in Tehran and Riyadh,” Amirabdollahian said, according to an official Arabic translation, Reuters reports.

Amirabdollahian was speaking at the end of his visit to Lebanon where he met with Lebanese officials including Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, according to the report.

Iran and Saudi Arabia took a significant step toward reconciliation in March when the two sides announced they would restore diplomatic ties after a seven-year rift, affirming the need for regional stability and agreeing to pursue economic cooperation.

The announcement surprised many around the world as Saudi Arabia and Iran have not had official, formal relations since 2016, when the kingdom broke ties with Iran after protesters invaded Saudi diplomatic posts there.

Progress on the rapprochement has been steady since that announcement. On Monday, Saudi Arabia helped evacuate Iranian citizens fleeing the war in Sudan.
