  • Saudi Arabia: 20,000m2 vertical farm construction kicks off

    Constructed by YesHealth, the new vertical farm will be 15 meters tall with a total growing area of 20,000m2, spread over 19 layers, and is capable of producing up to 2,200 kilograms of leafy greens per day.   • Bechtel in new initiative to promote construction jobs for women in Saudi Arabia

    US-based engineering and construction firm Bechtel has launched a new partnership with Saudi Women Engineers Society (SWES) to promote construction careers for women in Saudi Arabia. Bechtel said it would support not-for-profit SWES with professional development, skills enhancement, and career advancement opportunities for Saudi national women engineers. It said the new partnership was in support of Saudi’s Vision 2030 goal to empower women in the region by increasing career opportunities, including development and training, for women in the workforce.

    Saudi Arabia’s construction sector has projects worth SR8 trillion ($2.1 trillion) in the pipeline for the next eight years, according to a senior executive. Speaking on the sidelines of the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh, Jerry Todd, head of the National Development Division at the Public Investment Fund, told Arab News that the Kingdom’s well-established construction and building material sector is set to grow “very rapidly.” He said: “We are currently looking at SR3 trillion of spending on building things at the PIF level and about SR8 trillion at the country level over the next eight years.”

The government has also unveiled vast new tourism and entertainment projects that aim to attract visitors from around the world, while also encouraging Saudis to spend more domestically. “Saudi Arabia will become the world’s largest construction site,” said Faisal Durrani, head of Middle East research at Knight Frank. “It is a mammoth task,” he said, and “modern methods of construction like 3D printing, modular construction and off-site manufacture must be embraced.”

The UAE follows with 106 projects and 27,921 rooms, Egypt (91 projects/20,814 rooms), Qatar (43 projects/10,267 rooms) and Oman (33 projects/6,792 rooms).
