Saudi Arabia drives MENA e-commerce growth during festive season: Report
A joint study by Flowwow and Admitad found that during the 2024 holiday season, Saudi Arabia was a major factor in the 44% increase in e-commerce orders throughout the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Gifting, cultural celebrations, and mobile shopping trends all contributed to the spike. Around 62% of online purchases in Saudi Arabia were made on mobile devices, making it the country with the highest adoption rate of mobile commerce. The MENA e-commerce market is predicted to grow significantly and reach USD 50 billion by 2025, according to the report. Activity in this market significantly increased over the holiday season.

Saudi firm completes $1.24bn takeover of Olam’s agri unit
Saudi Arabia’s SALIC International Investment Company has acquired a 35.43% stake in Olam Agri Holdings for $1.24 billion. The deal, which closed on December 23, 2024, values Olam Agri Holdings at US$3.5 billion. Olam Group will retain a majority stake of 64.57% in the agricultural unit. The transaction was first announced in March 2022. As part of the agreement, Olam Agri and the Saudi Agriculture and Livestock Investment Company (SALIC) have established a Strategic Supply & Cooperation Agreement, aimed at expanding Olam’s presence in Middle Eastern markets.

Annual rainfall up 53% in Saudi Arabia
The annual rainfall in Saudi Arabia recorded an increase of 53.4% in 2023 compared to the previous year, according to figures from the kingdom’s General Authority for Statistics. The state agency also revealed that the amount of flood water that flowed into the kingdom’s dams last year amounted to 1,564 million cubic metres, recording an increase of 164.1% compared to the previous year.

Maximum fine of SR100000 for intentionally blocking or obstructing public road
The executive regulations of the Law of the Protection of Public Facilities stipulate that anyone who intentionally damages, blocks or obstructs a public road or flood drainage passages shall be slapped with a fine of 75 percent of the cost of repairing the damaged area, not to exceed SR100000. In the event of committing the violation by a group of persons, they shall jointly bear the value of the penalty, and this does not prevent the completion of the procedures for referring the perpetrators to the competent court. The executive regulations, approved by Minister of Municipalities and Housing Majid Al-Hogail, obligate the violator to compensate for all damages caused to the public facility, including the costs of repairing the damage caused.

Saudi National Team Qualifies for Semi-finals of 26th Arabian Gulf Cup with 3–1 Victory Over Iraq
The Saudi national football team has secured its qualification for the semi-finals of the 26th Arabian Gulf Cup after defeating Iraq 3–1 in its final group-stage match today. Saudi goals came from Forward Salem Al-Dawsari, who converted a penalty in the 57th minute, and Striker Abdullah Al-Hamdan, who scored in the 81st and 86th minutes. Iraq’s sole goal was scored by Forward Mohanad Ali in the 64th minute. With this victory, the Saudi team increased its points tally to six and secured its place in the semi-finals alongside group leader Bahrain.

Saudi Arabia to provide $500m in new economic support for Yemen
Saudi Arabia announced on Friday a new economic support package for Yemen worth $500 million and aimed at bolstering the government’s budget, stabilizing the Central Bank of Yemen, and fostering the development and stability of the Yemeni people. The latest assistance includes a $300 million deposit into the Central Bank of Yemen to improve economic and financial conditions, alongside $200 million to address the Yemeni budget deficit, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Saudi Arabia condemns Israel’s burning of Gaza hospital
Saudi Arabia on Friday denounced the burning of a Gaza hospital by Israeli forces and the forced removal of patients and medical staff from the facility. Hospital officials said that Israeli troops raided Kamal Adwan Hospital on Friday, gathered staff outside the facility, removed their clothes, and took them to an unknown location. Israeli soldiers then set fire to several parts of the facility, which is one of the last operating in the northernmost part of the Gaza Strip, including the surgery department, according to the Palestinian health ministry in the enclave.
