Chart: Turkey: 20 Earthquakes in Two Days
Thousands of people have been killed in Turkey and northern Syria after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck on Monday. According to data from the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), the earthquake and its aftershocks hit the areas of Central Turkey, East Turkey and the Turkish-Syrian border region between Monday 6 and Tuesday 7 February. As our chart shows, the initial 7.8 quake was closely followed by a 6.7 magnitude aftershock in the same region, and a 5.6 magnitude aftershock in the Turkey-Syria border region.

On average, there are fewer than 20 quakes over 7.0 magnitude in any year, making Monday's event severe. Compared with the 6.2 earthquake that hit central Italy in 2016 and killed some 300 people, the Turkey-Syria earthquake released 250 times as much energy, according to Joanna Faure Walker, head of the University College London Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction. Only two of the deadliest earthquakes from 2013 to 2022 were of the same magnitude as Monday's quake.

U.S. promises swift aid to Turkey and Syria after deadly earthquake
The U.S. is moving quickly to send assistance to Turkey and Syria as the death toll from a powerful earthquake continues to rise, President Joe Biden said Monday. “My Administration has been working closely with our NATO Ally Turkiye, and I authorized an immediate U.S. response. At my direction, senior American officials reached out immediately to their Turkish counterparts to coordinate any and all needed assistance,” Biden said in a statement. “Our teams are deploying quickly to begin to support Turkish search and rescue efforts and address the needs of those injured and displaced by the earthquake. U.S.-supported humanitarian partners are also responding to the destruction in Syria.”

More than 1,400 people were killed and thousands injured on Monday when a huge earthquake struck central Turkey and northwest Syria, pulversing apartment blocks and heaping more destruction on Syrian cities already devastated by years of war. The magnitude 7.8 quake, which hit in the early darkness of a winter morning, worst to strike Turkey this century. It was also felt in Cyprus and Lebanon. It was followed in the early afternoon by another large quake, magnitude 7.7.
