Reuters Photo Shows Iran’s Embassy in Riyadh Opening its Gates for First Time in 7 years

Iran’s embassy in Saudi Arabia opened its gates on Wednesday for the first time in seven years, a Reuters photo confirmed, as the two sides continued apace with the restoration of ties between them.

The diplomatic mission opened hours after the Iranian Foreign Ministry said a technical delegation had arrived in the Kingdom to oversee the work.

According to Reuters, the “heavy gates of the Iranian embassy’s compound were open in Riyadh with a team inspecting its premises, a Reuters reporter said. A white truck was seen arriving at the gate.”

The Iranian mission to Saudi Arabia follows a similar mission from Saudi Arabia to Iran on Saturday, April 8th.

Iran’s diplomats left the Embassy and the Kingdom on the 6th of January, 2016.

“In accordance with the implementation of the agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia on the resumption of diplomatic activities … the Iranian technical delegation arrived in Riyadh at midday Wednesday and was welcomed by Saudi officials,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said.

“The Iranian delegation will take the necessary steps to reopen the embassy in Riyadh and the consulate general in Jeddah as well as the activities of Iran’s permanent representative in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.”

Iran has signaled its support for a peaceful solution to the conflict in Yemen as ties between the once-rivals warm.
