Saudi Arabia Arrests 93 Suspected Members of Daesh, ‘Including at Least 65 Saudi Nationals’

Saudi Arabia has arrested 93 people suspected of belonging to the Sunni Muslim militant group Islamic State, including at least 65 Saudi nationals, according to a Reuters report this morning citing the SPA.

The round-up comes as Saudi Arabia intensifies its efforts to crack down against extremism both inside the Kingdom and externally in neighboring countries. The United States, Saudi Arabia and a coalition of Arab nations have coordinated air strikes against the group.

In February, Saudi Arabia hosted military officials from 26 nations, including the United States as represented by CENTCOM, for a two-day meeting to discuss joint efforts to combat the Islamic State.

Saudi Arabia and the United States are also coordinating in the training of moderate Syrian rebel forces to counter Assad’s forces and prevent a takeover of the Islamic State in the war-torn country.

Saudi Arabia conducted a similar round-up of suspected extremists on September 2nd, 2014, netting 88 suspected Daesh operatives and sympathizers.
